History

CAVINITAN is one of the early barangays in the Municipality of Virac. The word Cavinitan is derived from the the thorny grass named “vinit” which is abundant in the place before. Old story tells that, one day a farmer asked by his friend where he was going and the farmer answered “mapa uma, diyan na ako maagi sa “ka-vinit-an” (meaning plenty of vinits). Later, the place was named CAVINITAN.

There is no authentic record/s available which is definitely tells the date of the establishment of this barrio. However, based on research, Cavinitan Tribunal School House was opened in 1922 with the first teacher from Legazpi, Mr. Iluminado Vargas, hence it can be told that Barangay Cavinitan was already in existence before that time.
